Loss of Global Animal Protein

As salmon are carnivores, the energy and protein conversion (the amount of feed that is required to produce a farmed salmon) is a concern.

Although there have been very positive developments in increasing feed efficiency, it is important to consider how many wild fish are required to make up the fishmeal and where these fish are coming from. More than one tonne of wild fish are needed to make up the feed for one tonne of farmed salmon,[1] and these "feeder fish" often come from developing countries.  This is not a sustainable practice and taxes the fisheries of countries supplying fishmeal.[2], [3], [4][5],
